Currently, I am Deputy Chief of the Strategy Unit at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), where I lead the work on G20 issues. Prior to joining the Fund, I was a Tenured-Professor of Applied Economics at Complutense University (UCM). I have also served as a Deputy Director of the Spanish Prime Minister’s Economic Office and as the Executive director of the Ideas Foundation.
My latest analytical project has focused on inflation shocks. While working for the IMF, I have also led conjunctural and analytical chapters of Europe’s Regional Economic Outlook and launched the EUR's Covid Monitor at the outset of the pandemic. I have also led research for other IMF flagship publications such the Fiscal Monitor and the World Economic Outlook. My country work has covered a wide range of countries at all income levels, including Brazil, Croatia, Costa Rica, Portugal, Senegal, the UK and the Euro area.
As (co)author of 4 books and tens of academic articles and working papers, my research spans different areas, including macroeconomics, public finances, political economy, inequality, research and development or automation and the future of work.
I hold a PhD in Economics from Cambridge University (UK), a European Doctor degree in Economics from Complutense University (Spain), and a Master’s degree in International Affairs (IPE concentration) from Columbia University (USA).
In this webpage, I share some of my most relevant publications, presentations and opinion pieces, which I hope are useful to all visitors interested in economic policy topics.
